I recall reading this Yeats poem a lot after September 11, 2001. Even though we attacked the wrong country (twice) our institutions for the most part, held up - but I don’t think you would have El Presidente without Bush/Gore, 9/11, Katrina, and the mess in Iraq. This past week, when any American leader would rise to the sacred occasion, our Accelerationist President had assigned blame to an entire ideology (his enemies) before a suspect was identified!

American Conservativism is not the same as reactionary populism, authoritarianism, Christian Nationalism, or far-right Fascism. Charlie Kirk may have identified as a Conservative, but he wasn’t advocating for free trade or incremental change to institutions.
I’m a hard-core moderate by the way, centrist, and independent AF! Like the days after September 11, 2001 - when you had to watch what you say (Because they hate us for our freedom?) this week - Democrats were quick to release vague poll tested anodyne responses while journalists help to chum up the bloody waters. These statements could be written by A.I. they are just souless!
The Editorial board of the Albuquerque Journal stopped writing editorials about national/international events after 11/05/2024. The flagship newspaper of New Mexico wrote daily editorials, for over a century - criticizing every United States President from Rutherford Birchard Hayes to Joseph Robinette Biden. These editors put their moral cowardice far ahead of their journalistic ethics.There is no bigger amplifier of misinformation in the state of New Mexico - than the (A)social media websites of legacy local news outlets like the Albuquerque Journal, KOB4, KOAT7, and KRQE13. These unmoderated sites are where debate and democracy go to die. The moderated www.reddit.com/r/Albuquerque is far more credible source of community, conversation, debate and journalism!
