This past summer, I had the extremely fortunate experience of meeting with the motley crew of my Garcia family descendants! I recently attended a genealogy event at the ABQ Main Library - and I had been invited by my cousin Judy Alderette Garcia - a writer. (Keep an ear out for a Podcast with Judy - coming out this week!)
The main speaker was discussing the Spanish land grants in Torreon, New Mexico. She was talking about prominent families - and said the Garcias (My Family) were outlaws to the inlaws! A la! My great-great-grandfather was Ross Garcia, who was infamously murdered with an ax - by his drunken son-in-law Enrique Salas. The faith and strength of my great-great-grandmother Nemesia - along with that of my Great-Grandmother Griecelda Zamora inspires me. You just keep on going, keep on working, keep on living, keep on keeping on!
Everyone had a great time, it was a once-in-a-lifetime event! We broke bread in both Old Town Albuquerque and also in Torreon, NM. I didn’t realize one of my cousins was the cartoonist El Machete! Another one of my cousins is the writer Kirstin Valdez Quade.
